Join a walking safari among giraffes and antelopes in the heart of Greater Kruger
Savour world-class food and wine after a thrilling game drive with hippos, elephants, and lions
The Kruger Park spans over two million hectares and is located in the provinces of Mpumalanga and Limpopo in northeastern South Africa. It is one of the world’s largest national parks, comparable in size to Israel. With over 500 bird species, 300 tree species, 49 fish species, 33 amphibian species, 114 reptile species, and 147 mammal species, it is also among the world’s most wildlife-rich areas. Adjacent to the park are numerous private game reserves, which together form what is known as the “Greater Kruger.” The majority of these private reserves share unfenced borders with Kruger National Park, allowing animals to roam freely between these areas and the park. In addition to Kruger National Park, Greater Kruger includes private reserves such as Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Makuya, Letaba, Balule, Klaserie, Kapama (fenced), Umbabat, Makalali (fenced), and Manyeleti.
In Greater Kruger, you have a good chance of spotting the “Big Five,” although the likelihood depends on the season, the skills of guides and trackers, and, to some extent, luck. For an exceptional safari experience, Safari Collection recommends choosing a privately owned lodge in Greater Kruger, where the price is “all-inclusive.” This means that meals (three per day), local beverages, and two guided game drives daily are included in the cost. A unique feature of the private reserves is that safari vehicles are permitted to go off-road to get closer to the animals. Moreover, the guides and trackers in these reserves are highly skilled, significantly increasing your chances of encountering and experiencing more of the park’s incredible wildlife. Some lodges also offer walking safaris (with specially trained guides), which are particularly thrilling.
Safari Collection uses personal experience and in-depth local knowledge to guide you to the ultimate safari experience. The lodges listed below represent a carefully curated selection of the best that Greater Kruger has to offer, promising experiences and memories to last a lifetime. Stunning nature and a guide (Safari was his name) who was both highly knowledgeable about the animals and plants and had the remarkable ability to remember all our names and our individual preferences, which we mentioned on day one and continued to adjust and add to throughout the trip. The tracker (Victor) was also absolutely wonderful, and our personal butler (Friday) was an amazing guy. The managers and the rest of the staff were also fantastic and very accommodating. We all enjoyed ourselves to the fullest, and I can recommend Kirkmans Lodge to anyone considering a safari trip.”

“We were given such a warm and friendly welcome and were well taken care of. Despite arriving at around three in the afternoon, they served us a delicious lunch to ensure we were ready to join the evening safari at 4 PM. Our ranger, Sean, and our tracker, Rob, who were our guides, were absolutely outstanding at their jobs. Even though there wasn’t an abundance of animals—except for impalas—we still managed, after much driving and searching, to suddenly come across rhinos, hippos, giraffes, elephants, lions, leopards, or even cheetahs up close. After every drive, we returned with incredible experiences and great photos on our phones. Of course, we hoped to see the Big Five before heading home, but the large herd of buffalo had left the area and hadn’t been seen for two weeks. However, there were a few lone buffalo left behind, unable to keep up with the main herd, but finding them proved extremely difficult. After a lot of searching, we had to give up. And then something truly remarkable happened. While we were packing and getting ready for our journey home, a lone buffalo strolled past outside the hotel. Incredible! If we ever get the chance to go on another safari before we get too old, we will definitely return to Londolozi!”

It was such a joy to be out in the bush and see all the animals—we barely managed to see all the Big 5, spotting a leopard at the very last moment.
