One of the most common questions we receive is whether it’s possible to go on safari with children. Our answer is a resounding yes—it’s absolutely wonderful to experience and enjoy a safari together as a family, regardless of your children’s ages. In fact, we dare to say that there’s something uniquely magical about a safari that brings families closer together, creating shared memories that will last a lifetime. However, it’s essential that the trip is tailored to your family’s specific needs and preferences.
The destinations we recommend below offer exceptional family safaris with lodges specifically designed to cater to children. Some lodges are particularly child-friendly, offering babysitting services, safari programs for children, and kid-friendly menus. Most safari lodges, however, have a minimum age requirement of six years for children to join jeep safaris. That said, at many lodges, you can opt for a private safari jeep at an additional cost, allowing you to bring even the youngest members of your family—those under six years old. The private jeep comes with its own guide and tracker, making it an ideal solution for families of all ages.
Many lodges are thoughtfully designed with families in mind, offering accommodations in spacious family rooms. One important consideration is that some safari destinations are in malaria-affected areas. Below, you’ll find details on regions with malaria, low-risk malaria zones, and completely malaria-free options.

“We were given such a warm and friendly welcome and were well taken care of. Despite arriving at around three in the afternoon, they served us a delicious lunch to ensure we were ready to join the evening safari at 4 PM. Our ranger, Sean, and our tracker, Rob, who were our guides, were absolutely outstanding at their jobs. Even though there wasn’t an abundance of animals—except for impalas—we still managed, after much driving and searching, to suddenly come across rhinos, hippos, giraffes, elephants, lions, leopards, or even cheetahs up close. After every drive, we returned with incredible experiences and great photos on our phones. Of course, we hoped to see the Big Five before heading home, but the large herd of buffalo had left the area and hadn’t been seen for two weeks. However, there were a few lone buffalo left behind, unable to keep up with the main herd, but finding them proved extremely difficult. After a lot of searching, we had to give up. And then something truly remarkable happened. While we were packing and getting ready for our journey home, a lone buffalo strolled past outside the hotel. Incredible! If we ever get the chance to go on another safari before we get too old, we will definitely return to Londolozi!”

Located in northern Tanzania, Serengeti National Park spans 14,763 square kilometers, making it the country’s second-largest national park. The name “Serengeti” comes from the Maa language word siringet, meaning “endless plains.” The park borders Kenya to the north, connecting seamlessly to the famed Masai Mara Reserve, and to Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Singita Grumeti Reserve to the west. In 1981, Serengeti was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, further cementing its global significance.
The Serengeti is renowned for its extraordinary concentration of savanna-dwelling wildlife, including the awe-inspiring Great Migration, where approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, along with zebras and other species, traverse its vast plains. This annual journey is one of nature’s most spectacular events. Serengeti is home to 30 species of grazers, such as African buffalo, giraffe, Thomson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, topi, warthog, hippopotamus, and hartebeest, as well as a small population of the critically endangered black rhinoceros.
Carnivores are well-represented with 13 large predator species, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, jackals, and crocodiles. The rare African wild dog can also be found in the park, though sightings are rare. Serengeti offers walking safaris of the highest standard, allowing for an intimate exploration of this extraordinary landscape. Safari options vary by lodge.
